
Director of The Kinsey Institute
Indiana University-Bloomington
Indiana University seeks an innovative and energetic senior scholar to
serve as the Director of The Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender,
and Reproduction. Founded in 1947, The Kinsey Institute (KI) is based
at Indiana University. The mission of the KI is to promote interdisciplinary
research and scholarship in the fields of human sexuality, gender, and
reproduction. The Institute carries out this mission through the development
of specialized collections of resources for scholars (the art and photography
collections that are the largest and most significant holdings of their
kind); programs of research and publication; interdisciplinary conferences
and seminars; provision of information services to researchers; and graduate
training. The Institute's broader mission includes service to the University
and professional communities through teaching, clinical and research training,
tours and presentations, and to the public through provision of clinical
services for problems related to sexual and reproductive health and referral
to appropriate organizations and groups. The unique history, collections
and research of The Kinsey Institute have established it as a leader internationally
in scholarship, teaching and service in sexuality, gender and reproduction.
Qualifications of the Director:
1) An established career in research into human sexuality and a scholarly
record and reputation appropriate for appointment as a tenured full professor
at Indiana University.
2) A commitment to a broad interdisciplinary approach to understanding
human sexuality.
3) A successful record in obtaining research funding and other financial
support. (The sources of this funding will vary depending on the discipline
of the Director.)
4) A commitment to maintaining a balance in the Institute among: i) research;
ii) maintenance, development and provision of access to the Institute's
research collections and library; iii) graduate education; iv) provision
of information to the academic, professional and policy making communities;
and v) clinical management of sexual problems.
5) Administrative and managerial experience.
6) Effectiveness as a public speaker with a sensitive approach to political
issues and how to discuss them with the media.
Principal Responsibilities:
1) Serve as the chief executive officer of the KI, reporting to the KI
Board of Governors, the KI Board of Trustees, and the Vice President for
Research and Dean of the University Graduate School, Indiana University.
2) Promote the integration of the KI into the academic community of Indiana
University.
3) Promote international collaborations in research and training in the
field of sex, gender and reproduction.
Specific Responsibilities:
1) Administration: oversee the general administration and fiscal management
of the KI.
2) Research: lead the KI's interdisciplinary research program, pursuing
and encouraging others to pursue successful grant applications for research
funding.
3) Collections: provide overall supervision of KI staff for the library,
archives, and art/photography collections.
4) Information Services: supervise the Head of Information Services in
the provision of information to the academic and professional communities.
5) Graduate Education: act as Chair or appoint a chair of the KI's Graduate
Education Committee and serve as liaison with the Committee for the Interdisciplinary
Minor in Human Sexuality.
6) Kinsey Institute Sexual Health Clinic: assures continuation of this
service and its training, research and public relations benefits to the
KI and IU.
7) Development: work with the Director of Development to build an appropriate
endowment and other types of external funding to assure the financial
independence and growth of the KI.
Salary and rank are negotiable and competitive, dependent upon experience
and qualifications.
