Condom Use Errors and Problems
DESCRIPTION:
Consistent and correct use of latex condoms has been widely recommended
as a public health strategy against sexually transmitted diseases, including
HIV infection. Although studies of diverse populations have focused on the
consistency of condom use, a relatively small number of studies have assessed
condom use errors, and their assessment of the wide range of possible condom
use errors was limited. Failure to use condoms correctly could compromise
their efficacy, causing breakage and slippage.
CURRENT PROJECTS:
- We are comprehensively evaluating condom use errors and problems among several
samples, including college men and women, detained youth, and high-risk
adults in an AIDS epicenter.
- A group of men and women are providing daily information about condom use in the form of digital diaries of their mood, daily activities, and sexual
behavior, recorded on PDAs.

In a study of heterosexual college men, various condom use errors were frequent. For more details, see Study Finds Condom Use Errors Are Common. (2003)
