Sweet Potato I, 2009
Sterling silver, paper, wax, prisma color
3 1/4” x 4” x 2 ”
JE4.197This series of work is an exploration of form and texture as it relates to the body. I have made paper molds from various vegetables, mainly the sweet potato, and coated them in wax to enhance the form in a seductive yet sweet manner. The color, texture and form of these pieces can be associated with flesh, sexuality, desire, and femininity. The title "Sweet Potato" can be taken literally or as a term of endearment. - Dawn White (Springfield, Massachusetts)

The Phenomenology of Sex, 2008
Video (DVD) no sound
00:07:11
JE4.261One of the “sexiest concepts” in the history of philosophy is the notion of “flux.” Even in the tone and cadence of the word, we can hear something of the tempting sensuality implied in the raw procession of sensory experience. The flux of experience is typically characterized by artists and thinkers as an undifferentiated continuum of sensuous particular, haphazard, unorganized, a Òraw stuff” to be ordered and structured by our sense organs and the cognitive structure of the mind.
This video work of visual flux- and optical sex- seeks to counter somewhat the traditional notion of flux. It is based on a phenomenological investigation in which flux is explored, not as a random sequence of unstructured percepts, but rather as a concatenation of rhythms.

Shelf Fungus, 2008
Archival inkjet print
32” x 42”
JE4.634Shelf Fungus and Impression are part of an ongoing project entitled “Nature Lovers”, in which I explore and photograph parks where men go to have sex, usually anonymously. The traces of these sexual encounters reveal the dual needs for connection and anonymity and a tension between public and private. These images reveal a complicated interplay between taboo, shame, titillation, tenderness, secrecy, exhibitionism, and danger. This work not only provides insight into the activities of a subculture of which most people are unaware, it also strives to address the way our culture deals with sex and sexuality. Here, the ideal and the real come into conflict and shed light onto why these men are compelled to go to parks for sex.
