The Cockettes (USA; 2003)
Original U.S. one sheet movie poster
This gender-bending documentary tells the story of the Cockettes, a short-lived San Francisco drag troupe that, through its twenty live performances and four short films, mocked sexual taboos and openly embraced the freewheeling sexual attitudes of the counterculture. Although the glitter and tinsel-soaked performances gained a strong following in the Bay area with shows such as “A Crab on Uranus Means You're Loved,” the act faced a cool reception when they decided to transport their anarchic shows to the New York stage. The Cockettes were stylistic precursors to the glam-rock explosion embodied by performers such as David Bowie and the New York Dolls.
