In an unusual take on the “buddy movie” genre, Robert DeNiro plays a homophobic security guard whose recent stroke requires him to take rehabilitative vocal lessons from his pre-operative transgendered neighbor. In a strange plot twist, the pair eventually cross paths with a dangerous drug lord in search of his lost money. Although the film’s plot ventures beyond absurdity and many of the drag queen supporting characters are two dimensional stereotypes, the film boasts an impressive performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman, who later won an Oscar for his performance in Capote (2005).
