Go Fish (USA; 1994)

Co-written and produced by Chicago independent filmmakers Rose Troche and Guinevere Turner, Go Fish caught the eye of both the lesbian community and the independent film world through its engaging comedic love story.  Although the black and white film was produced on a very low budget with many non-professional actors, the film surprised audiences with its matter-of-fact acceptance of the characters’ lesbian lives.  The characters do not question their sexuality or struggle to find acceptance in a straight world; they are all women comfortable with their lesbian identities who are simply looking for love.  Although made for a modest $15,000, the film grossed more that $2.4 million in the United States.
