Through its treatment of its homosexual characters as loving, passionate, and comfortable with their sexuality, the small British film My Beautiful Laundrette helped to define the gay-positive genre of “New Queer Cinema.”  The script, by writer Hanif Kureishi, was nominated for an Academy Award in the United States, where the film enjoyed success in the art house market and helped to establish acting newcomer Daniel Day-Lewis.
