European “risqué” film (1922; title unknown)
Frame capture
France was one of the major production centers of “risqué,” or stag films, during the 1920s. Within such early erotic films, which existed primarily on the black market and were manufactured for viewing in private gatherings, male homosexuality was rarely a subject. However, lesbian activity, as typified by this frame capture from one French film, was a common subject of stag films in many countries from the silent film period onward. These depictions of Sapphic love, however, have almost always been staged for the pleasure of a male heterosexual audience.
