The Church Looks at Immorality in Print and On Screen (ca. 1959)
Booklet
Some church organizations assembled brochures, pamphlets, or small books in order to “educate” their congregations about the sinful depictions of sex in the media, including what was perceived to be the scourge of homosexuality. This booklet, produced by the Columbus, Ohio-based Board for Christian Social Action, denounces sex, crime, and violence in books, magazines, and movies. Among the “false views” that the booklet claims are perpetuated in the media is the enticing presentation of homosexuality. Regarding vice in media, the book complains, “That such themes are so widely devoured is a commentary less perhaps on the avarice of publishers and distributors than on the moral mediocrity, the mental slothfulness, the sexual illiteracy, and the emotional immaturity of millions of American people.”
