Just as Cruising mobilized an angry gay community to protest its portrayal of male homosexuality as sordid and dangerous, so too did Windows raise hackles because of its murderous vision of lesbianism. Building on Hollywood’s tradition of portraying lesbians as mentally unstable as well as potentially dangerous, Windows tells the story of a psychotic lesbian who will go to any length to win over her heterosexual love interest, Emily (Talia Shire), including plotting the rape of the object of her desire. Windows was distributed by United Artists, the same studio that released Cruising.
