Hilary Swank won a Best Actress Academy Award for her powerful performance as Brandon Teena, a Nebraska youth who was brutally murdered by two male friends after they discovered than Teena was biologically female. Born Teena Renae Brandon, Teena had begun living as a man in his late teens. Soon after moving to Falls City, Nebraska, his identity was revealed following his arrest for check forgery, setting in motion the events leading to his death on December 31, 1993.
