Mädchen in Uniform (Germany; 1931)
Movie still
The German film Mädchen in Uniform (1931) was ahead of its time in its sensitive portrayal of lesbian love. In the film, a young girl sent to boarding school falls for one of her female teachers. The film’s plot made it controversial in Germany, where the Nazis attempted to burn all copies of the film, and in the United States, where it was banned until First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt helped lift the ban. The film later was remade in the United States in 1958.
