Avinoff loved the ballet and met the Russian dancer Nijinsky at the height of his career. He made several portraits of the star of the Ballets Russes prior to the nervous collapse that ended the dancer’s career. This painting combines Avinoff’s appreciation of Nijinsky with his interest in entomology.
